Entry 2
I thought that “10 Tips on How to Write Less Badly” was a very informative and interesting article. I knew that some people who held important positions were bad writers. For example, the superintendent of the school district that I went to was an intelligent man. He obviously struggled with writing because every letter he wrote made him sound stupid. He tried to sound smart which just made him sound like an idiot. Even though I knew many professionals struggle with writing, I did not know that professors also struggle with writing, just like most students. I agree that writing is just like a sport in a sense that one has to practice in order to improve. Most people do not want to put forth the effort or the time to practice writing, which explains why the majority of the population struggles with writing. Many people seem to accept the fact that they have to practice hitting a baseball or even doing additional math problems to get better but for many it is not the same case with writing. The article states time as one of the biggest factors in becoming a better writer. Most people (myself included) wait until the last minute to write a paper. Most people think they write better under pressure. My experiences with procrastination prove that I write faster, not better, when I am crunched for time. When I spread out the work over a few days my papers are much better. The article was very informative and I will try to incorporate some of the author’s tips into my writing process.

I agree with your statement about writing under pressure. I find that if I write a paper the night before it becomes rushed. I like having time for my papers so that my thought process can be clearer.
ReplyDeleteWhen I am under pressure with time when a paper is due, I get very frustrated which doesn't help my writing at all. Since I get stressed, it normally takes me longer to write it because I am so critical of myself. Plus I am not focusing on the paper, instead I am focusing on how dumb I was to wait till the last minute. With this class, I am going to try my best to give myself time so I can put forth my best effort in each assignment.

ReplyDeleteThat pretty much says it all. :)
I love how you said that you write faster, not better, when you have less time. That is very true and definitely how I am as a writer as well. I think that writing may even be more enjoyable if it is done more in advance because it will not feel like it is as much of a "job".
