Entry 4
Anne Dillard’s article is a must read for every college student. Anne Dillard’s advice is a combination of things that most college students know (and choose to ignore) and new advice that contradict what all of us learned when we were younger. One piece of advice that Anne Dillard gave was to learn grammar. She followed that up with learning punctuation. I don’t think I have been struggling with the grammar aspect of writing but I have been having problems with punctuation. I think I just forget the punctuation rules and I should probably look them up just to refresh my brain. Anne Dillard says to proofread and to get someone else to proof read. I have done a much better job at proofreading so far but I have not gotten someone else to proofread my papers for me. I still feel uncomfortable with others reading my paper before I think it is finished. For the next paper I write, I will make it my goal to let someone proofread my paper. Anne Dillard’s advice to use the words “walk and say” even though everyone’s sixth grade teacher told us otherwise was humorous and meaningful because I remember my sixth grade teacher scolding the class when we all used those words. I will try to incorporate Anne Dillard’s advice of describing the senses in more detail to get to the readers emotions. I feel like I have lacked sensory details in all of my papers. I’m going to use Anne Dillard’s advice while I’m writing which will hopefully make me a better writer.

ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about proofreading. I have always been nervous to ask someone to do this because I don't know how they are going to critise it. For project one I had people proofread what I wrote and it wasn't as bad as I thought! They even gave me a new perspective on things about my paper. I think that making proofreading your goal for your next paper is great!
ReplyDeleteI think it is hard to have someone else read your paper. I am always afraid that they are going to rip it apart when I worked so hard. I have been getting better with having other people read my work before handing things in. I think I just have to get over my fear of what people will say because in the end it will help me.
ReplyDeleteI would have to agree that I don't like asking people to proofread my paper, because I don't know how they are going to respond.
ReplyDeleteJust remember, ripping it apart to make it better is a good thing. ;)
ReplyDeleteI also do not do a good job of proofread my papers. Sure I let Spellcheck do most of the work but that still doesnt make the cut (so I've learned). I am also going towork on my proofreading skills.
